At Rogue Jiu-Jitsu, we believe the academy is more than just a place to train—it’s a community built on respect, safety, and growth. Our etiquette guidelines help create an environment where everyone can learn, train hard, and support each other, whether on or off the mats.

Off the Mats

  • Greet and Include Everyone. We are a team. Introduce yourself to new members, and foster a welcoming environment.

  • Respect Each Other’s Identity. Address teammates by their chosen name and pronouns. This simple courtesy promotes a welcoming atmosphere and shows that everyone’s personhood is supported on the mats.

  • No Bare Feet Off the Mat. Wear indoor slippers or your outdoor shoes when off the mat, especially in the bathroom.

  • Treat the Gym Like Your Home. Pick up after yourself, check the Lost and Found and bring home your personal items, and help keep our space fresh for everyone.

  • Show Sportsmanship. Support your teammates in success and struggles. We grow together.

  • Represent Well. Whether at an event or online, act with respect and integrity as part of the Rogue Jiu-Jitsu community.

  • Enter and Exit Considerately. If you need to arrive late, come onto the mat with as little disruption as possible. If you need to leave early, just let the instructor know so we’re aware.

  • Take Care of Yourself. Rest when needed, hydrate, and train for longevity.

On the Mats

  • Your Choice, No Questions Asked. You have the right to decline training with anyone for any reason. No explanations needed. Respect others if they do the same.

  • Be a Good Training Partner. Adjust to your partner’s size, age, experience, and goals. Train in a way that keeps both of you safe, productive, and able to enjoy the session.

  • Leave Your Ego at the Door. Everyone is here to learn, improve, and help each other grow.

  • No Dangerous Moves. Strictly follow the list of illegal and dangerous moves. Review the full link [here]. Train responsibly.

  • Train Smart & Safe. Respect your training partners. Tap early, release quickly, and avoid reckless movements.

  • Respect the Tap. Tapping means stop. Don’t apply submissions with excessive force.

  • Tap Early, Tap Clearly, Tap Responsibly. Protect yourself. Jiu-jitsu is about learning, not proving toughness.

  • Stay Aware. Be mindful of your space. If you’re near another group rolling or at the edge of the mat, adjust accordingly.

  • Hygiene First. Keep your gi, rash guards, and gear clean. Trim your nails, and shower before class if needed. We have limited supplies in the bathroom for you to freshen up. After class, shower and wash your equipment as soon as possible.

  • Avoid Strong Scents. Keep the training space comfortable for everyone by avoiding heavy natural odors, perfumes, colognes, or scented products.

  • Listen to Instructors. Follow class structure, and respect the lesson plan.

  • No Shoes on the Mat. Keep the training area clean by removing shoes before stepping onto the mats.

  • No Training While Sick. If you’re sick or have a contagious skin infection, stay home and rest. Protect your teammates.
